Our Guiding Principles: Ecotrek Overalls Edition

To be honest, there’s a lot of stuff in the world and we don’t want to make more of it just ‘cause.

As a growing apparel brand, however, it’s easy to feel like it’s our job to be cranking out new products all the time. While we are developing new products regularly, our own design principles, along with external guidelines like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), provide a path toward responsible, intentional product and business development.

If you’ve been a LIVSN fan for some time now, you’re probably familiar with our Design Principles . From our very first product - the Flex Canvas Pants - our design principles have led the way. Each time we approach a new product, we look back on our design principles to make sure we’re staying true to who we are and what we believe makes a product worth existing. The Ecotrek Overalls are no exception. Here’s how:

Our Last Design Principle, “Strive for the lowest environmental impact without compromising function,” is new to the lineup.

Although it’s always been part of our DNA, we’re proud to now make it a formal part of our Design Principles. For a more in-depth explanation of what this one means, check out our Life Cycle Assessment blog post which explores the relationship between impact and function.

As we grow, we recognize the importance of not only staying true to who we are but also of aligning our goals with critical global goals. In this instance, we’ve sought the intersection of our Design Principles with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. This agenda, “provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.” The SDGs “are an urgent call for action by all countries in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”

In short, the SDGs are a highly researched framework for - you guessed it - sustainable development. Although LIVSN is not quite qualified to be a Member State of the UN, we are a small part of one and we believe in the power of goal-alignment and collective action. Here’s how we’re approaching the goals with our latest product:

These internal and external guidelines help keep us aligned with the kind of makers we want to be. We don’t write these things down because they’re revolutionary ideas (although in an increasingly fast apparel industry it sometimes feels that way). We write these things down to allow ourselves and others to hold us accountable over time. In a hundred years, we want to be a legacy brand with an unwavering approach to intentional design.

Although we don’t have all the right answers just yet, we’re committed to continually asking hard questions and having open, honest conversations upstream and downstream. We consider you part of the push toward a more responsible industry and we’re grateful to have customers, fans, and even critics to hold us accountable to these things we’ve written down.

Thank you for your time. We know it’s very valuable.
